Each year millions of dollars are lost to the simple pilferage of goods from cartons while they are in transit. About one quarter of all boxes shipped use a nylon reinforced water gum tape as their primary closure system. This type of tape is inexpensive, very strong and considered a standard in the shipping industry. Cutting of this tape to gain access to the box is quite simple. It is rarely, if ever, detected by the recipient. Once received and a bill of lading is signed, victims find their goods missing without remedy. After cutting and removing your valuables, any clear pressure sensitive carton sealing tape can be used to re-close the box surreptitiously. Undetected losses are uncollectible losses as carriers are NOT obligated to pay claims for mysterious disappearances with a signed bill of lading in hand.
CGM-AST now offers a means by which the cost conscious shipper can continue to use this form of tape and still maintain a high level of security for his parcels while in transit.
Our Tamper Evident Water Gum Tape uses a high sheer and high strength water activated adhesive system in addition to the nylon banding embedded into the tape. The tape can be applied in the normal fashion, either by hand or automatically. The tape is quite strong and reliable for closing boxes weighing up to 100 pounds. The tape is 3" wide and it can be provided in any length roll desired, although 375' is standard.
What makes this system unique is our patented face coating that clearly shows cutting and resealing by revealing a hidden message approximately 2 hours after re-taping. This hidden message is in the form of a word pattern, typically 'OPENED'. In this way recipient seeing the box marked "open" will not sign for the box thereby making the claim theft based rather than a standard cargo claim.
In this way the thief returns the partially pilfered box back into the transit stream instead of considering removing the entire box. The Tamper Evident tape is also sequentially numbered thereby removing the option of getting more tape and replacing it completely. Appropriate protocols for numeric monitoring are required for this system to be useful.
Water Gum Tamper Evident Tape can also be custom printed with logo/text and sequentially numbered every 6 inches making each piece unique and accountable.
